Originally formed from a restructuring of the Rapp Motorenwerke aircraft-manufacturing firm in Munich, it was forced to discontinue making aircraft engines by the Treaty of Versailles and switched to making motorcycles in 1923 and cars in 1928. It also adopted the now-famous roundel in blue and white segments (the colours of the Bavarian coat of arms) with the letters “BMW” as its symbol in 1917. ![]() Whatever about the correct slang, there is no doubting the commercial success of the company that began as Bayerische Fluzeug-Werke in 1916 and adopted the name Bayerische Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Works) the following year. However, a Bloomberg BusinessWeek editor (on June 30th, 2003) had no doubt that "Bimmer" was the correct term for cars because a Google search resulted in 10 times as many hits as "Beemer" did. The Toronto Globe and Mail insisted on "Bimmer" and dismissed "Beemer" as a "yuppie abomination" (April 7th, 2009) but I'm with Washington's Tacoma News Tribune which saw "auto snobs" as responsible for what it regarded as the false verbal distinction (October 25th, 2002). In this way, we show that we are a "true aficionado" and not one of the "uninitiated". At least, that has been the case on this side of the pond, but in the US some specialists, such as Shirley Kennedy in The Savvy Guide to Motorcycles (2005) and Brock Yates in the Washington Post (March 12th, 1989) have been anxious to point out that we must make a distinction between "Beemer", which refers only to BMW motorcyles, and "Bimmer" which should be used exclusively for BMW cars. And the firm that manufactured that status symbol is 100 years in existence today.įor long in English, the slang terms "Beemer" and "Bimmer" have been in use to refer to both BMW cars and motorcyles. It was the line, “drove a BMW” that attracted my attention as it was clearly meant to indicate that Bukowski was a success, in material terms that is, by driving such a status symbol as well as having the nice house and the swimming pool. The German-American writer Charles Bukowski, described by Time magazine in 1986 as a "laureate of American low life", was the subject of this interesting anonymous poem: "Bukowski's later years weren't so bad / He lived in a nice house / With a swimming pool in the back yard, / Drove a BMW, / Didn't drink so much, /Enjoyed the success of discovery, / Sold books and movies, / And never gave in again." ![]() ![]() While kinders may not entirely understand the concept of acid-base reactions, they’ll still get a kick out of spraying these baking soda ice cubes with lemon juice and watching them fizz away! ![]() Learn more: Raising Lifelong Learners 17. Its 26.3-degree rake is a nice middle ground for sharp steering and straight-line stability. We hopped on the freeway for a bit to see how the EXR moved along at elevated speeds, and it did just fine so long as you didn’t try any super quick or twitchy maneuvers. ![]() Leaving the line in map 4 means you can lay rubber tracks – thick, black ones (hey, minds out of the gutter, people) – for about as long as you want or until you run out of room, which happens quickly as the EXR accelerates with alarming force up to its 71-mph top speed (in stock gearing). Acceleration in this map rivals any 1000cc motorcycle, and things truly get blurry in a hurry. Map 4? Leave room in your budget for tires in map 4 because it’s all business. Three and four are definitely overkill for the street, but man, are they fun for some real hooligan shenanigans. A flick of the wrist in this output setting and the front end is either coming up or the rear is breaking loose, so hold on. Map 3 really kicks it up a notch, as Emeril likes to say, and the EXR starts pulling with arm stretching force. But be careful, the police don’t like it when “your steering axle isn’t touching the ground” – something a police officer once nabbed me for many moons ago. Oh, and all that torque meant keeping your front tire on the ground was a challenge – too tempting not to give in to for my poor soul, unfortunately. Little twists of the right grip resulted instantaneous passing of anything you were trying to get around. It was in this map where I spent most of the afternoon riding around in San Francisco because anything more is kind of unnecessary. To my surprise, a heavy whack of the throttle could light up the rear tire no problem, especially from a stop, but it was still mellow enough that breaking the rear end loose and maintaining traction was never a problem unless you made it one. I started off on the street in Map 1 to get a feel for how the rear tire would behave under heavy throttle on the road because after all, it is a knobby. You can feel a major difference clicking from two to three in not only power delivery, but engine braking too. Maps 2-4 increase the power gradually along with various tweaks for different output characteristics including more engine braking in maps three and four. Meaning, an off-road focused dual-sport can do it all, but a street-focused one simply cannot, and we’re here to tell you the Redshift EXR does it all. It basically comes down to the “all squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares” logic. Rather, they probably bought one with visions of riding down the road and up into the mountains / hills / trails / sand pits / whatever your local region offers / etc., but a streetier dual-sport will only get you so far. Few people buy a dual-sport for heavy street use. Plus, it will ride and handle street duty just fine compared to a street-focused dual-sport, but that’s not why you bought a dual-sport in the first place. On the other hand, if you get yourself a dual-sport that leans to the off-road side of things, like the Redshift EXR, you’ll get to experience the possibilities a true dual-purpose motorcycle can offer. It gets around town nicely and odds are the owner bought it because they liked the look and ruggedness of a road-going dirtbike (nothing wrong with that), but take it to the dirt and you’ll quickly recognize it’s more of a streetbike with dirtbike fenders than anything else.Ģ018 Alta Motors Redshift MX and MXR First Ride Review A street-focused dual-sport is just that – street-focused. Some land in the middle with hopes of handling double-duty, but as a result, do neither well, while others lean to either side. Oh, and did I mention it’s street-legal?ĭual-sport motorcycles all fall somewhere in the spectrum between off-road and street use. The EXR is essentially an MXR (Alta’s top level motocrosser) with turn signals, and let me explain why that’s a good thing. We just rode the 2019 Redshift EXR and have come away truly impressed. ![]() That’s a bold statement – I know – but ask anyone who’s ridden an Alta Redshift what it’s like, and I’d bet the farm they’d tell you it was a hoot. ![]() ![]() Raindrop peperomia soil needsĪ well-draining potting mix is crucial for all peperomia plants. If your peperomia plant is not getting adequate light, you’ll notice the stems become leggy and it will grow slanted toward the light source. When grown outdoors, this plant should be placed in partial shade with no direct sunlight, especially if you live in a hot region. An east or west facing window is ideal throughout the year.Īvoid direct sunlight, especially in the summer, because it could scorch the leaves and cause discoloration. If you plan on growing it indoors, place it near a window with bright, indirect light for the best results. One critical thing to remember about peperomia raindrop care is that it’s a hardy plant that doesn’t depend on direct sunlight. Pilea peperomioides plant Peperomia polybotrya raindrop Peperomia polybotrya raindrop How much light does a peperomia raindrop need? But damnit if the big, showy leaves on each of these plants don’t make them look pretty similar! Check it out, and then we’ll move along to caring for the raindrop. Peperomia raindrops, on the other hand, grow from thick stems and do not send out runners and reproduce like the pilea peperomioides plant does. They can be chopped off and easily propagated, which is the reason this plant is often called the “pass it on plant.” The plant also sends runners out under the soil to produce baby plants, which are literally smaller versions of the mother plant. Pilea peperomioides plants (aka Chinese money plants), generally have a single main woody-looking stem and mother plant that grows up and sprouts new leaves from the top as it gets taller. This is all to say that despite the fact that they have similar appearances, they are not closely related at all. The peperomia raindrop/polybotrya also hails from Central and South America, while the pilea peperomioides comes from China, which is pretty much clear across the world. Like, one group down from the classification of “plantae kingdom.” I’m not going to pretend I’m some sort of botanist here, but I think we all know that the plantae kingdom is literally “plants.” So the biggest group you can get! They do belong to the same clades (angiosperms and tracheophytes), but those are really, really big groups. Rosales (order) > Urticaceae (family) > Pilea (genus) > peperomioides (species) ![]() Piperales (order) > Piperaceae (family) > Peperomia (genus) > polybotrya (species) They aren’t even really related, if you can believe it. The peperomia raindrop and the pilea peperomioides are not the same plant. I want to clarify something before we get rolling on the care guide. They prefer warm, shady, humid environments, and they have been cultivated in most tropical and subtropical regions in the world. The peperomia raindrop specifically is native to tropical regions in Central and South America, namely Colombia and Peru. Most are small perennial epiphytes that grow on wood and rotting trees. ![]() The name Peperomia polybotrya comes from the Greek language and translates directly to “resembling many peppers.” The genus peperomia is found all across the globe, including in South America, the Philippines, Australia, and parts of Africa like Madagascar. There are thousands of species in the genus peperomia, including the plant we’re focusing on, the Peperomia polybotrya or the “ peperomia raindrop.” Other common names include the coin-leaf peperomia, coin plant, and even Chinese money plant, though that is usually more commonly used to refer to the pilea peperomioides (more on that in a bit). Their sturdy stems and fleshy leaves make them sound kind of like a succulent-they aren’t succulents, but their care is pretty similar to succulent care. They make great additions to any room in the house because they aren’t difficult to care for and come in a compact form, only growing to be a foot tall. The peperomia raindrop makes a gorgeous houseplant because of its large glossy, heart-shaped leaves. If you’ve recently acquired a peperomia polypotrya (aka raindrop) and aren’t sure how to care for it, this is your guide! Note that you must not specify a build type (Debug or Release) since it apparently conflicts with the manually set compiler flags. Set(CMAKE_EXE_LINKER_FLAGS "-s") # Strip binary This is an example that shows how to do it: cmake_minimum_required(VERSION 2.6) So before forcing compiler options, you need to check that the compiler is really GCC. However, keep in mind that a CMakeLists.txt file should ideally work with many compilers. Last, if you are a GCC wizard and you want full control of the options passed to the compiler, you can also set them manually. And if you find uncomfortable to have to edit the CMakeLists.txt file to switch between Release and Debug mode, you can also specify the option in the CMake command line, like this: mkdir build & cd build usr/bin/c++ -O3 -DNDEBUG CMakeFiles/hello.dir/ CMakeFiles/hello.dir/ usr/bin/c++ -O3 -DNDEBUG -o CMakeFiles/hello.dir/ -c /tmp/cmaketest/foo.cpp usr/bin/c++ -O3 -DNDEBUG -o CMakeFiles/hello.dir/ -c /tmp/cmaketest/main.cpp With the Release build type, the options passed to the compiler are these: Of course, change “Release” with “Debug” for debug builds. To fix this you simply need to specify a build type in the CMakeLists.txt file, in this way: set(CMAKE_BUILD_TYPE Release)Īt the end of your CMakeLists.txt file. The build type is a feature most IDE have, it allows you to compile your program in “debug” mode, for easily single-stepping through it with a debugger, or in “release” mode, with speed optimization enabled. That’s because no build type has been specified to CMake. Now, if you’ve read my previous blog post on GCC’s compiler flags, you might probably not like what you see, since no optimization flag has been passed to GCC and as a result, your program won’t run as fast as it should. usr/bin/c++ CMakeFiles/hello.dir/ CMakeFiles/hello.dir/ -o hello usr/bin/c++ -o CMakeFiles/hello.dir/ -c /tmp/cmaketest/foo.cpp Building CXX object CMakeFiles/hello.dir/ usr/bin/c++ -o CMakeFiles/hello.dir/ -c /tmp/cmaketest/main.cpp Here is the relevant part of the printout: But if the goal is to see the compiler flags used, it is always possible to override this behaviour with the VERBOSE=1 option. By default CMake hides the options passed to the compiler, and displays a higher level status indicator with the build completion percentage together with the name of the file currently being built (a much more elegant solution than autoconf). The interesting thing here is the VERBOSE=1 option. To do so, it is possible to use the commands: mkdir build & cd build ![]() But let’s see exactly what CMake does to compile these files. The first CMakeLists.txt looked like this: cmake_minimum_required(VERSION 2.6)Īs already explained, it successfully creates an executable called “hello” using the main.cpp and foo.cpp source files. Now it’s time to explore the CMake syntax further. I am certain we will return to this restaurant when we visit Myrtle Beach in the future. It’s not the first time I talk about CMake in this blog, for the introduction read here.
